The Natural Body Detox
Does It Really Cleanse Your Body?
Detoxification is the practice of getting rid of addictive substances that are present in the body with a view to breaking that addiction. There are a variety of ways to cleanse your body of toxic substances. If you are addicted to nicotine the first stage of giving up smoking is to give yourself an internal body cleanse to get rid of the nicotine. This is done simply by not smoking for seventy-two hours.
There are other detoxification interventions for various drugs and for alcohol. The basic principle is that detoxing in a real, concrete sense is focusing on a particular substance that we know is in the body and finding a way to eliminate it.
Does A Detox Cleanse Your Body?
Detoxification in the alternative therapy sense does not work on the idea of defining a specific toxin and eliminating it. Detoxing is based on the folk wisdom that says we can force all toxins from our bodies. How to give yourself an organic total body cleanse? By eating certain foods while avoiding others, undergoing a healthy colon body cleanse and enduring long or short periods of fasting. No specific toxins are targeted so no results can be shown that indicate the success or failure of your efforts body cleansing detoxification.
As the advocates of internal body cleansing don’t specify any actual substances that they eliminate from the body (besides the obvious nicotine, caffeine and alcohol) we can’t even be sure that such toxins exist. There are certain chemicals like pesticides and heavy metals that are known to enter the body but detoxification therapies and diets have not been shown to reduce the levels of these substances.
According to believers in detoxification, one method of internal body cleansing is to receive a healthy colon body cleanse. If you need some kind of medical procedure in the colon area you will receive a colon cleanse to make it easier for the doctors to see what they are doing and to minimize risk of infection.
There is no evidence that you need a colon cleanse for any other reason. Some therapists will recommend a colon body cleanse to relieve constipation. A natural, non-invasive treatment would be simply to go on a high-fiber diet, exercise regularly and to make sure you are drinking enough fluids.
Scientists say that even if it is true that the body is taking in more toxins in our modern age, the body is perfectly capable of eliminating them through the action of the kidneys, liver and intestines without help from a detox program.
Fasting Can Be Harmful
One of the most popular ways to cleanse your body naturally is fasting. Your basic natural body detox where you stop ingesting all solid substances, good and bad. The trouble is, when you fast for any period of time you are opening your body to the possibility of malnutrition. If you go without food for a long time you reduce your blood glucose. When your blood glucose is low you are setting off a chain reaction that results in your body feeding on its own muscle tissue. Any fast longer than three days should only be undertaken after you have spoken to your doctor.
Body Toxins And The Placebo Effect
In spite of the lack of scientific evidence to support it you will find many testimonials from happy followers of such internal body cleansing practices as detox diets, water fasts and colonic irrigation. According to researchers these glowing reports are mostly due to the placebo effect. The basic idea behind the idea of the placebo effect is that people’s health improves if they believe they are engaging in an activity that will improve it.
Another side to the placebo effect is the belief held by some scientific researchers that all illnesses follow cycles that involve periods of remission. If these times of improvement in health coincide with the sufferer undergoing some form of treatment they will naturally think that the treatment is responsible for the improvement. Eliminating this possibility is part of the process of trialling medical treatments before claims are made for their efficacy. Unfortunately alternative therapists and other practitioners who claim to be able to help you cleanse your body don’t subject their diets, potions and natural body cleansing techniques to rigorous trials.
